ISSUE: Radial Nerve Paralysis & Muscle Atrophy

Charge Forward x Just One Time '16' Filly

ON ARRIVAL

Case Study 1 on arrival side

This horse suffered a temporary radial nerve paralysis injury to the off side shoulder which resulted in moderate muscle atrophy of the supra and infraspinatus musculature on her right-side shoulder with a lameness scale of 4/5.

Upon arrival at Gundy Park Equine, she was under muscled, more so on the whole offside, including the hind quarters. She was half grade lame at walk and 2-3/5 lame at trot as well as having no fitness at all. Her stride was also a half foot shorter than the other and there was no over track.

Withing a few days of arrival, Kelly Fawcett from Still Point Equine Therapies gave the Filly an all over treatment and we set up a forward plan of a routine of stretches.

By week 6, the Filly was 100% sound at both walk and trot, and she was up to doing steady canter work around the 1400mtr training track. On departure at week 8, she was cantering 2 steady laps. She was sound with equal muscle tone and an over track of 5cm at even stride.
